Do you need 3rd Life?

You can start Heartfall without watching 3rd Life. That is the developer's sentence, not a reviewer's opinion.
I copied the Steam sentence before I wrote anything else on this page. Then I used the Grian Wikipedia page only for the public origin of the series, so a new player knows what the name refers to.
The developer's answer
The Steam description says: No knowledge of 3rd Life is required to play. The carrd calls the project a collaborative game about that series and says the team is not affiliated with Grian or the 3rd Life SMP cast. You do not need the series. The game also does not speak for the cast.
What 3rd Life is, briefly
Wikipedia's Grian page describes 3rd Life as an experimental hardcore Minecraft series with a twist, launched in April 2021 by Grian with 13 other YouTubers. Later seasons include Last Life, Limited Life, and Secret Life. The wider cast grew to 18 participants. That is background. It is not a Heartfall mechanic list.
Questions
Will I miss the jokes if I skip 3rd Life?
The developer says prior knowledge is not required. Some references will land harder if you know the series. That is not the same as a locked door.
